The story so far

    Trips to the nest

Every visit is a parent landing at the nest. Only a couple dozen a day while she quietly incubated, the trips climbed to nearly three hundred at the busiest, then tapered off as the chicks grew and fledged.

    Her incubation, by the minute

Across the days she kept the eggs warm, slipping away only for quick meals. Frozen here now that the nest is filling with hungry chicks and the day-to-day counts get busy.

Each row is one day of incubation; each square is one hour of it, deeper green meaning more time on the nest. Hover or tap a square for that hour's tally; the 🐣 mark the moment each egg hatched.

A robin's blue-green eggs get their color from a pigment called biliverdin, brushed onto each shell as it forms.
